Why Laughter Yoga? And what is it exactly?
"We don't laugh because we are happy. We are happy because we laugh."
William James
Laughter Yoga is a unique concept that combines laughter without reason with yogic breathing. We laugh without jokes, humor, or comedy. Laughter exercises help to initiate laughter intentionally – intentional laughter can quickly become spontaneous laughter.
Laughter Yoga utilizes the scientific fact that the body cannot distinguish between spontaneous and intentionally induced laughter. Therefore, "fake it until you make it" applies. Because Laughter Yoga is practiced in a group, a contagious dynamic emerges through the effect of mirror neurons.
What's special about laughter is that it combines the positive aspects of breathing exercises, laughter, and social activities. When we breathe deeper, a better exchange of oxygen occurs. When we laugh, the body releases endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. Conversely, levels of stress hormones decrease in people who practice Laughter Yoga. Those who laugh can momentarily step out of the carousel of daily worries. A well-conducted study from New Zealand has also shown that intentionally induced laughter has a significant positive influence on heart rate variability, which was higher than in participants who watched funny movies in a group or didn't laugh at all.
Laughter Yoga was invented in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria in Mumbai. He asked hundreds of people in a park if they wanted to laugh with him. When he gathered a group of five, he began telling jokes, but soon realized not everyone shared the same humor. He then developed laughter exercises for laughter without reason. Since then, Laughter Yoga has evolved steadily and is now practiced in over 120 countries in thousands of Laughter Clubs in offices, fitness studios, rehab clinics, parks, and many other places.
About Max
In 2008, I visited Angela Mecking's Laughter Club at Kreativhaus for the first time and was thrilled by the positive effects of Laughter Yoga. I am proud that I can now continue this Laughter Club and that Heidi Janetzky is regularly available as a substitute.
From 2009 onwards, I regularly led the Laughter Meditation group founded by Thomas Dräger in Schöneberg and learned to appreciate long and intense laughter.
In 2016, I completed my training as a certified Laughter Yoga Leader (Level 1 CLYT) with Angela Mecking. Since 2025, I am also a certified Laughter Yoga Teacher (Level 2 CLYTT) and completed the training under Master Trainers Egbert Griebeling, Angela Mecking, and Gisela Dombrowsky.
